  • Earlier this year, a four-member team from the Redwood Valley FFA chapter demonstrated its dominance in poultry judging when it placed first at the state contest.
The team, which placed second through fifth individually, competed for the chance to compete at the national level, and this week that team, which includes Heather Kipfer, Rachel Schroeder, Macius Schroeder and Caleb Krause, are going to compete in that national poultry evaluation career development event.
Since winning the state contest the team has certainly not rested on its past successes.
“We’ve practiced every Tuesday during the summer,” said Kipfer, adding they are planning to spend lots of time before the contest is held Thursday continuing to prepare.
At the state CDE, the team had to judge different classes related to poultry from eggs to egg laying hens, as well as looking at carcasses and taking a test.
The national contest, said Rachel Schroeder, includes more challenges for the team, including a further processed meat portion that has them judging things like chicken patties. The team is also going to be judging a class of broilers.
Another new twist, said Macius Schroeder, is having to present oral reasons explaining why they judged a class the way they did.
The team headed to Indianapolis this morning, and the poultry evaluation is Thursday morning.
The team is making a couple of stops during their drive to Indiana to poultry related facilities to add to their level of knowledge.
Krause said the team is heading into the contest believing it has a good chance to win. However, they would be satisfied if they place in the top five.
