What began in the basement of his dad’s home with a household oven and an Eastwood HoatCoat gun has evolved into a growing business in Echo.
C&L Powder Coating, which is owned and operated by Chris and Lisa Borning of Echo, recently took a big step in opening a storefront in the small community.
“We officially opened in July,” said Chris, adding the building they purchased was known for many years as the Varpness Equipment building. “There is a lot of room to expand and grow our business here.”
What does the new Echo business include?
Primarily what is done is the process known as powder coating, which Chris explained is the use of a ground up polymer that goes onto an item electrostatically. He added if the item being power coated is prepared correctly it can really prolong the life of that item.
Borning powder coats metal and uses two recently acquired ovens, which have 12- and 20-foot capacity respectively, which allows him to do much larger items than he could when he first started doing powder coating as a hobby.
Borning, a Yellow Medi-cine East high school graduate, attended Minnesota West Community and Tech-nical College in Granite Falls and was certified to do machine tooling, but after a few years working for someone else, Borning opted to venture out on his own.
Having done a lot of powder coating for friends and for his own racing interests, Borning had gained a reputation as one who could do the job and do it well.
The fact he is gaining customers across the region and as far away as Illinois is certainly evidence of that.
In order to grow the operation, a business plan was developed, and loans were secured from the Southwest Initiative Foundation and the Upper Minnesota Valley Regional Development Commission. Those loans allowed him ot purchase the ovens, a forklift and other equipment used in the powder coating process.
Borning has gained some consistent business from customers and has gotten to the point where he is planning to add on another employee, and he said he is planning to grow the business even more by doing some of his own metal fabrication at the site.
Borning said he has four times as much business now as he did when he first went out on his own in 2010.
Borning is at the store five days a week form about 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.
