Anna Hoestermann arrived in Redwood Falls Sept. 5 and just a few days later she was getting acclimated to her new school setting as an RVHS student.
Hoestermann, who is from Essen, Germany – a city with a population of 100,000 – admitted small town life is something she is adjusting to, but she said the Jeff and Joan Schmidt family (her hosts during her stay in the U.S.) are helping her with that transition.
“I wanted to have the experience of living in another country for a year,” she said, adding the chance to improve her English speaking was another reason she decided to become an exchange student.
For her the chance to live an everyday life in a place that doesn’t offer what she would see in Germany is going to be a good learning experience.
Hoestermann, who is 15, is taking classes including English, history, algebra, French and art, said she is still learning the school system.
As a student she said she really likes the school spirit she has already experienced and the chance to take part in other activities, such as volleyball, in school. Hoestermann, who is involved in rowing and tennis back in Germany, said she decided she wanted to give some other activities a try. That could mean playing basketball and softball this school year, too.
The daughter of Carl E. and Marion Hoestermann, said there is a possibility she may not have to repeat her current school year again back home based on how well she does on her classes here. Hoestermann, who has had four years of English education said even with that schooling the transition to speaking nothing but English in Redwood Falls has been hard.
One of the issues, she said, is the accent here is different than what she had been taught, which she said meant at first she really could not understand much. Hoestermann said she is hoping to do some traveling to see the U.S. sites and may be visiting New York and California with family when they visit from Germany. So, far, Hoestermann said she is enjoying her time and she hopes to experience a lot more before going home in June.
