  • Clayton Arthur Mahlum, 94, of Sacred Heart, died Sunday, September 16, 2012, at the RenVilla Nursing Home in Renville.
    Funeral services will be held Friday, September 21, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sacred Heart. Pastor Dale Svendsen is officiating.  
    Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held today from 5-8 p.m. and continue on Friday one hour prior to the services all at the church in Sacred Heart. Arrangements with Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Sacred Heart.
    Clayton Arthur Mahlum was born August 19, 1918, in Hawk Creek Township, Renville County to Gilbert and Carrie (Johnson) Mahlum.
    When Clayton was a very young child his mother died, and he then went to live with his aunt and uncle Ole and Hulda Mahlum.
    Clayton served his country in the United States Army from November 4, 1941 until December 9, 1945. During the service he was stationed in the Philippines and New Guinea.
    Following the service, Clayton returned to Sacred Heart and was united in marriage to Ruth Dannen July 19, 1947, in Clara City.  
    Over the years, Clayton worked numerous jobs including working at the Sacred Heart Co-op, Victor Fluid Power in Granite Falls and Warner Manufacturing in Sacred Heart.
    He was a lifelong member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and a member of the Fire Department, VFW and American Legion all in Sacred Heart.
    Clayton loved to cook, bake banana bread, garden and enjoyed going to rummage sales, farm shows and threshing bees.   
    Survivors include his son and daughters:  Neil (and Terry) Mahlum of Sacred Heart, Lois (and Tim) Davis of Redwood Falls and Cindy (and Lee) Hertling of Janesville; his grandchildren:  Kelly and Marcia Mahlum, Charles, Stacy and Mike Davis and Matt and Ryan Hertling, 10 great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.  
    He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth, his parents, his brothers Leonard and Gordon and his sister Corrine.
