Jan Dallenbach, 78, passed away Sunday, September 16, 2012 at his home in Farmington.
Jan Francis Dallenbach was born on July 15, 1934 to Hugo and Frances (Ocharzk) Dallenbach in Tracy. He grew up on farms in rural Walnut Grove, graduating from Walnut Grove High School in 1952.
Jan received an associate’s degree from the University of Minnesota and graduated from Mankato State University with bachelors, masters and educational specialist degrees.
Jan spent 39 years as an educator. He taught elementary school in Tracy and Fairmont and served as an elementary school principal in Springfield and Northfield. During the last five years of his public school career he was superintendent of the school in Morton.
In retirement he spent a year as the elementary principal of Sacred Heart School in Robbinsdale and then spent a few years as housing coordinator for the Northfield Community Action Center. I
n retirement Jan also served as clerk of Bridgewater Township.
On July 29, 1967 Jan married JoAnn Flaig at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Sanborn. Together they raised four children. Many summers were spent camping and traveling with the family. In 2003 Jan and JoAnn moved to New Ulm to care for their grandchildren. When Jan’s health began to decline they moved to Lakeville/Farmington in 2007.
Jan is survived by his wife, JoAnn and four children, Jay (Emily Shirbroun) of Seattle, Wash., Janel (Michael) Sasser of New Ulm, Mark (Tonya) of Farmington, Amy (Joseph) Ray of Lakeville, eight grandchildren: Mikayla, Brooke, Cole and Carson Sasser, Justus and Josiah Ray and Devon and Taylor Dallenbach; brothers David of Tulsa, Okla., Richard of Walnut Grove and sister Marilyn Phillippe of Cottonwood.
Jan had a special love for children, the elderly the poor, refugees and the less fortunate and spent many hours volunteering for the church and community. He was active in Lions Clubs, Knights of Columbus (past Grand Knight), National Federation of the Blind, Refugee Committee, St. Dominic Parish Council, Boy Scouts. He was a past board member of Three Rivers Community Action Council, past president of the Northfield Senior Citizens, past board member of Lakeville Senior Center and many choirs.
Jan loved classical music and was a talented musician and vocalist. He enjoyed collecting antiques and refinishing furniture along with growing flowers and plants.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. today at All Saints Catholic Church in Lakeville. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service at church. Interment in All Saints Cemetery.
