Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls is kicking off the fall with some toe-tapping, down-home harmony this weekend with The Green Lake Bluegrass Band. Each year the local congregation celebrates the beginning of the school year on what is known as Blessing Sunday.
This year Blessing Sunday is being held during the 9 a.m. worship service with the bluegrass band accompanying all of the weekend events.
Worship is centered around the blessings received during the life of the Christian child. This includes a blessing for all three-year-olds, third grad-ers and seventh graders, as well as all teachers.
All Sunday school students, parents and teachers are going to be dismissed early from the worship service to attend a gathering session to learn more about the rotation-based curriculum being used in the program this year.
Following the service, a lunch follows.
Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend and to bring their family, friends and neighbors.
The Green Lake Blue-grass Band got its start at the Lutheran Bible camp on Green Lake about 10 years ago.
While the group originally was made up of three members, it has grown to include five performers today.
As the band has grown, so have the styles of music. Now, in addition to the traditional bluegrass style of music, the band also plays gospel, folk and some Irish music.
Many of the songs are familiar to audiences, and those in attendance often find themselves singing along during the music.
