Laurie Ourada of Lucan was diagnosed with Linear Scleroderma in 1983.
It is a rare autoimmune disorder that causes the body to attack its own immune system and it affects the skin, arteries, kidneys, lungs and joints.
Ourada has been in remission for a number of years now, but since March of this year, she has dealt with serious, life-threatening medical issues with complications. It seems the Linear Scleroderma is showing its true colors with the damage it has already done in her body.
Over the past five months she has had three major surgeries, numerous ambulance rides, ICU and hospital stays and still has a long road of healing ahead of her.
Due to all the recent abdominal surgeries and the amount of atrophy, her abdomen had to be rebuilt with a decelluized pigskin graft. The cost for the pigskin was more than $30,000 per sheet. This was done at the University of Kansas in Kansas City, Kansas by Dr. C. Richart.
The family has incurred significant medical, travel and hotel expenses, coupled with months away from work due to Ourada’s medical status.
She is currently at home, but is unable to work. This gives added stress since she is self-employed and has no benefits.
So, with that in mind, her friends and family are asking for your help and support. They have planned a benefit for Ourada that is being held Sept. 8 from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. in the Lucan city park.
A full meal is going to be available that includes grilled burgers and hotdogs. Events planned for the day include an adult and youth kickball tournament, beanbag tournament and silent auc-tion/raffle.
Those who would like to register a team for kickball or to get more information, call Ourada’s daughter, Andrea Bond, (651) 769-7433 or send an e-mail to her at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you would like to register a team for the bean bag tournament or get more information, call Ourada’s son, Brandon, at (507) 829-5181.
The family is also looking for volunteers to assist them in making the event successful. Those who might be able to help out that day please call Andrea Bond.
Also, those who would like to donate an item for the silent auction/raffle, should call her.
Those who are unable to attend the benefit, but would still like to donate, can mail donations to: Laurie Ourada Benefit, First Independent Bank, P.O. Box 138, Lucan, MN 56255 and make the check out to Laurie Ourada.
