  • Redwood Valley track and field head coach Andy Regnier stressed from the beginning of April he hoped to have his athletes peaking by the time the Section 3A?meet rolled around in late May.
His wishes came true Thursday afternoon in Pipestone as the Cardinal boys put together their best meet of the season,  scoring 90 team points on the way to a second place finish behind Montevideo (97).
Redwood Valley is going to send on eight individuals in eight different events led by junior?RJ?Juell who is going to compete in four.
Juell held off Jack?Thony of MCC by 1/4” in the long jump to win the event with a leap of 21’ 1 3/4”.
He also finished second in the high jump (6’3”) and pole vault (13’) and was part of the second place 4x400 relay team along with Jacob Prouty, Chris Fischer and Ryan Phillips that recorded a season best 3:33.69?(finishing just .25 of a second behind Montevideo).
Phillips – just a sophomore – is going to be competing in three events after a second place finish in the 800 meter run (2:02.76).
He also anchored the winning 4x800 relay team of Aiden Dirlam, Alex Amunrud and Wes Peyerl that dominated the field with a time of 8:31.26.
Fischer earned a spot in the 110 hurdles with a second place finish (15.69), and Dillon Thooft (an alternate in the 4x800) was second in the 3,200 meter run (10:23.88).
Fischer nearly pulled off the daily double in the hurdles, placing third in the 300 intermediates with a time of 41.48 (just .18 behind second place finisher Austin LaFollette of Southwest Minnesota Christian).
Amunrud added a fourth place finish in the 1,600 (4:48.67), Nick VonMosch was fifth in the 3,200 meter run (10:41.27) and seventh in the 1,600 (4:53.51) and Prouty added a seventh in the 400 (54.41)
The Cards now begin to prepare for the Class A state meet which takes place June 8-9 at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Freshmen Kayla Huhnerkoch and Beckycia Bowers both earned a pair of first place finishes to help the Cardinal girls place in a tie for second overall.
LQPV/DB ran away with the Section 3A event, scoring 104.3 team points to top Redwood Valley and Benson/KMS who each finished with 55.
