  • A few thoughts of my own, others

  • I have to admit I?am pretty excited about the Redwood Valley FFA Chapter poultry team qualifying for the national contest. It’s not just because I am a proud dad, although that is certainly part of it.

  •   A number of local school districts are celebrating their high school prom this coming weekend, including the students in the Redwood Area School District. If you are interested in this kind of thing, the grand march is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. at the school. While I?am not much of a prom guy, I can appreciate, mostly because of the females in my life, that there are those of you who think this is a pretty big deal. In fact, I?recently heard the average high school couple is spending $1,000 on their prom experience. I’m pretty sure Kelly and I didn’t even spend that much on our wedding. Anyway, whatever kind of money you have invested in this night, it only makes sense for you to enjoy it in a way you are going to remember. So, as you plan for prom this year, just keep in mind this is not a time to do something you are going to regret or that could have an impact on the rest of your life. Enjoy your time at prom, just don’t do something you know your mom would not approve of if she is watching. Because we all know, especially in a small community, if you do something dumb Mom is going to find out. Trust me. … I?received a wonderful Letter to the Editor from a third grader at Reede Gray Elementary School named Pari Elizabeth Bailey. As the letter was brief, I?opted to share her thoughts here rather than have it get lost elsewhere. This is what she wrote: It’s sad that Taco John’s is closing, but I?have an idea. Redwood needs more food choices, and I?was thinking we could have a sushi restaurant, or at least a Japanese one. If people like Chinese, they’ll love Japanese. Honestly, I have never been to a Japanese restaurant, but I?would bet if someone were to open one they would have a frequent customer in Miss Bailey. Thanks for the letter, Pari. It is always good to hear the opinions of people like you whose thoughts are just as valuable as those of adults. After all, when you think about it as parents we often go to the restaurants where we know our kids are going to find something they are going to like. I think having a place where I?could get some good barbecued ribs would be good, too. … Tomorrow night, The Rusty Bucket is hosting a March of Dimes fundraiser. I?think it is great when local businesses get involved in events like this, and I applaud all of you who have invested in good causes and in the community. While I am not much of a singer, I want to encourage those of you who are and who get into the whole karaoke thing to come down and sing your best rendition. Just remember, the most times your song has the word “baby”?in it the more money you are going to raise. One dime at a time, you can help raise money to ensure those newborns who may be having some sort of struggle as they enter the world receive the help they need. So, get your vocal chords warmed up and sing, baby, sing. … I have to admit I?am pretty excited about the Redwood Valley FFA Chapter poultry team qualifying for the national contest. It’s not just because I am a proud dad, although that is certainly part of it. I?have watched this team over the years, especially Heather and Rachel, and to see them go out on top as seniors (especially after a heartbreaking second place finish one year ago) makes for a great story. Congratulations on your success at the state contest. Also, congratulations to all of the FFA members from the area who did well at state.
