Racing out to an early 11-2 lead, the CM/Comfrey boys basketball team soared to an 82-47 rout of visiting Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity Thursday night in Section 2A-North semifinal action.
Since starting the season 2-4, the Cougars have gone 19-2 with its only losses an overtime defeat at New Ulm Cathedral and on the road at Tomahawk Conference champion Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s.
The surging Cougars have earned a rematch with the top-seeded Knights (22-4) Monday afternoon at 5 p.m. in St. Peter for the Section 2A-North Sub-section title.
The Knights - winners of 16 of its past 17 games - defeated the Cougars twice during the regular season and earned a spot in the championship game with a hard fought 105-100 win over ACGC Thursday night in Sleepy Eye.
The Cougars left no doubt who was the better team in its battle with LP/HT, grabbing a 38-20 halftime lead and cruising in the second half to an easy victory.
Ryan Pendleton led a balanced attack with 20 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Marcus Heiling went 7-of-11 from the floor on the way to 18 points and eight rebounds.
Dylan Kopischke added 13 points and six rebounds and Sam Pendleton knocked down a trio of three’s on the way to 13 points, six rebounds, four steals and four assists.
Brady Herrig added five points and three boards and Trevor Serbus buried a three-pointer.
