Four runners set personal bests as the Redwood Valley boys cross country team continued its push towards Sections with an impressive second place finish Saturday at the Milaca Mega Meet.
The Cardinals – currently ranked sixth in the latest Class A team poll – finished with 104 team points to place second behind champion St. Cloud Cathedral (51) in the 29-team event.
Alex Amunrud once again led the way, finishing just three seconds off of his personal best to place 13th in a time of 17:12.
Ryan Phillips broke his personal best by five seconds to finish 21st (17:34) and Dillon?Thooft took eight seconds off of his personal best to finish 22nd (17:36).
Nick VonMosch set a personal best by six seconds in finishing 25th (17:40), and Brett Olsen knocked 14 seconds off of his personal best to earn a 29th place finish (17:42).
Once again the Cardinals showed nice balance with the top five runners all finishing inside of the top 30 out of 166 total runners.
Wes Peyerl was 68th with a season best time (18:32), and Josiah Passe finished in 104th (19:30).
In JV?competition, Kody Thul led the way with a 70th place finish, and Derek Bebeau would finish 97th.
Bruce Helsper set a personal best, knocking 31 seconds off of his previous low.
In the girls competition, the Cardinals finished in 13th place against a tough field that included champion St. Cloud Cathedral (55), Esko (60) and Adrian (84).
Freshman Mary Fixsen led the way with a 35th place finish (16:27).
Nicole Bunting (17:03) was 56th, Tessa Heiling placed 85th (17:59), Stacy Liebl was 89th (18:04), Megan Riley finished 128th (19:05), Kendra Goblirsch was 131st (19:14) and Darion Miller-Ahrens placed 145th (21:03).
In JV competition, Emily Rigge led the way, followed by Jorden Minkel and Janessa Read.

In a battle of the two top boys cross country teams in the SWC, the Marshall Tigers held off Redwood Valley 18-43 to claim victory Thursday at the Redwood Valley Invitational.
Running at the Redwood Falls Golf Club, the Tigers claimed four of the first six finishers, including the top three in Grant VanKeulen (16:39), Andrew Bell (16:49) and Chad DeAustin (16:53).
Alex Amunrud continued to lead the way for the Cards finishing in fourth place with a time of 16:58.
Ryan Phillips was fifth with his time of 17:23 and Nick VonMosch earned a seventh place finish in 17:32.
Dillon Thooft was 12th (17:53), Wes Peyerl finished in 15th (18:12), Kody Thul was 22nd (19:05) and Derek Bebeau placed 24th (19:12).
Other finishers for the Cardinals included:?Colin Fuhr (32nd), Bruce Helsper (44th), David Helsper (45th), Ben Ovre (47th), Jacob Angermeyer (50th), Gavin Zempel (51st), Juan Hernandez (22:40), William Buffie (56th), Cameron?Haase (58th) and Dustin Gransee (62nd).
The Cardinal boys took part in the WIllmar Invitational on?Saturday and are back in action Thursday at BOLD.

The Redwood Valley girls also finished in second place to Marshall, losing 25-45 in a SWC showdown.
Leading the way once again for the Cards was Mary Fixsen who finished third in a time of 16:32.
Rebecca Fedde (16:00) and Haley VanKeulen (16:32) paced Marshall with the top two finishers.
Nicole Bunting earned a seventh place finish in 16:52, Tessa Heiling was 10th (17:49) and Stacy Liebl 12th (18:18).
Megan Riley finished 15th (19:06), Kendra Goblirsch was 17th (19:39) and Darion Miller-Ahrens placed 23rd (20:19).
Other Cardinal finishers included:?Jordan Minkel (33rd), Courtney Siegfried (34th), Janessa Read (36th) and Hannah Ovre (37th).
