Florence Amanda Cairns, the daughter of Henry and Anne (Schaeffer) Buller, was born July 24, 1909 in Shaokatan Township, Lincoln County, Minnesota. She grew up in the rural Hendricks area, receiving her elementary education at New Grove School and graduating as valedictorian from Hendricks High School. Florence then earned her registered nursing degree through Anchor Hospital in St. Paul and was employed there as an RN for a time.
On December 28, 1936, Florence married Dr. R.J. Cairns at the home of her parents in rural Hendricks. The couple lived in Burlington, Wis. and Sanborn before moving to Redwood Falls in 1940. First and foremost a wife and mother, Florence also assisted her husband in his medical practice. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Redwood Falls where she was active in ladies’ circle. Florence also belonged to the Philolectian Study Club and a bridge club, and volunteered for the Red Cross at the bloodmobile.
She enjoyed reading cookbooks, collecting recipes, and listening to KNUJ’s daily recipe program. Florence was a big fan of Minnesota sports; she enjoyed watching U of M Gopher sports, the Vikings and the Twins. Florence loved her home on Ramsey Street. She enjoyed watching the birds that came to her feeders – in particular the cardinals. She loved the view of the river from her kitchen window – especially the sunsets.
Florence is survived by her children Dr. R. Scott Cairns (Sandra) of Dubuque, Iowa, Jim Cairns of Truman, Barb Smith (Charles) of Boise, Idaho, and Lynn J. Cairns (John D. Olsen) of Rice. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren; currently 14 great-grandchildren; her brother Lyle Buller of Marshall; former daughter-in-law Lois Cairns; and former son-in-law Dr. Mike Flinn of Redwood Falls. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. R.J. Cairns, December 3, 1976; her daughter Norma A. (Cairns) Flinn in February 2007 and 12 siblings.
Blessed be her memory.
