Rev. Arthur R. Berthelsen, 77, of Belview, died in Parkview Home in Belview on Friday, October 23, 2009. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2009 in Grace Lutheran Church in Belview. 


 

 


Rev. Arthur R. Berthelsen, 77, of Belview, died in Parkview Home in Belview on Friday, October 23, 2009. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2009 in Grace Lutheran Church in Belview. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for Grace Lutheran Church; Green Lake Lutheran Ministries; Parkview Nursing Home or Redwood County Hospice. Arthur Raymond Berthelsen was born February 21, 1932 in Oshkosh, Wis. to Rev. Holger and Clara Rehwald Berthelsen. Two years later, Clara died after the birth of his sister Priscilla. In 1935, Holger married Ruth Jensen who raised and loved Arthur and Priscilla.

He attended schools in Iowa, California, and South Dakota, graduating in 1949 from High School at Viborg, S.D. He attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls for two years until his father’s death. He then worked for one year, entered the United States Army in 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1956. Returning to school, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana College in 1959. That fall he began his studies at Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul. A year of internship was spent at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Canby. He graduated from Luther Theological Seminary in 1963.

In September of 1962, he was married to Rose Marie Wornson of Hadley. She is a graduate of Fairview Hospital School of Nursing, Minneapolis.

He accepted his first call to St. John’s Lutheran Church of Bradley and Crocker Lutheran Church of Crocker, S.D. in 1963. He later served Immanuel Lutheran Church in Canova South Dakota from 1966 to 1973, and Grace Lutheran Church in Belview Minnesota from 1973 until his retirement Easter Sunday in 1997.

His main hobbies were model trains and sharing conversation and jokes. He lived with Rose in Belview until his death.

He is survived by his wife Rose Marie Berthelsen; his children Mike Berthelsen (Melissa) of Northfield, Mark Berthelsen (Kari) of St. Paul; and Beth Jahn (Dave) of Hutchinson; his grandchildren: Tasha and Devan Jahn; Erik, Nathan and Jonah Berthelsen; his sister Priscilla Gunnarson (Alton) of Rochester and their sons Todd and Jay with their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother Ruth.
